During the year firefighters from the different stations in Chatham-Kent hold fundraisers to raise money to donate to worthwhile causes in their communities, charities and other causes.

Wheatley Firefighters held a fundraiser and has donated $1000.00 to Camp Bucko which is a camp for “burn survivors”. These funds will sponsor two children to be able to attend the free camp that runs for one week up in the Muskokas. Paul Hickey, our area representative for the camp, and Bobbie Dawson, a local burn survivor and
camper/counsellor were on hand to receive the cheque from Station Chief Doug Tofflemire and Firefighter Derek Resendes. This will be the fourth donation to the camp from the Wheatley Firefighters. Other firefighters in Chatham-Kent have also donated in the past.

Donations were also made to the Public Education Division of the department from Wheatley and Dresden Firefighters to purchase a 911 Simulator. This machine gives the opportunity for citizens to place a “mock” 911 call and practise answering the prompts that could be given in a real emergency. We recognize that it will be a good simulation for all residents, but see it as a great opportunity to practise with higher risk populations including children, seniors and newcomers. These types of simulations will help reduce nervousness and assist people to gain confidence in giving beneficial information to assist in timely and effective responses from police, fire and EMS ambulance.

The 911 simulator was donated in memory of former Wheatley Fire Chief Donald C. Harris who passed away in 2007. Donald had a special interest and passion for fire safety education. It is very fitting that he be remembered in this manner.
