Remember these important points…

• Install a working smoke alarm on every storey in your home and outside all sleeping areas. It’s the law!
• Test you smoke alarm once a month.
• Replace batteries twice a year or when the alarm “chirps” indicating low battery.
• Replace your smoke alarms every ten years.
• Make sure everyone in your family knows shat to do if the smoke alarm sounds.

2. Once out, stay out
3. Go to your outside meeting place
4. Call 911 from a safe place

Chatham-Kent Police, Fire and EMS personnel, as well as residents of Chatham-Kent, are being called to action to donate blood during the month of April in support of Uniforms United – a month-long blood donor campaign spearheaded by police officers Doug and Renee Cowell.

This April marks the 11th anniversary of the tragic loss of the Cowell’s baby girl, Bailey. During her battle with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and subsequent heart transplant, Bailey received over 140 blood products. In addition to their annual Green Ribbon Campaign to support organ donation awareness, Doug and Renee would like to extend an invitation to fellow emergency services personnel and the residents of Chatham-Kent to give back by donating blood.

A record number of lives have been saved through donations, but more donors are urgently needed.

• One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance the lives of up to 75 others through tissue donation
• Every 3 days someone dies in Ontario waiting
• Everyone is a potential donor regardless of age
• Recovery of organs and tissue is carried out with respect and dignity
• Studies have shown that donating the organs of a loved one has provided comfort to family members

Today the Chatham-Kent Fire Department is pleased to announce the addition of their new Fire Safety Trailer, which will be used to deliver fire safety educational programs throughout the municipality.

“The new trailer gives us another tool in our comprehensive fire education strategy. The unit is mobile and provides a great venue that we can take to different events. The trailer design is appealing and the program is interactive. This will help us attract people to participate, especially children, providing an opportunity for us to deliver our key messages in keeping them safe. Our fire statistics show a trend of a reduction in fire incidents.
Preventing fires through compliance to the fire code, by-laws and education have contributed to the decrease”, explains Assistant Fire Chief Ray Stone.

Some of the features of the new trailer that will be beneficial to us include:

• Being able to pull the trailer with a pick up truck rather than a semi, resulting in no need for a special AZ licence. All trained firefighters will be able to transport the trailer
• One level – no high slide from second level used to escape which caused potential safety issues
• Two door exits to accommodate a better flow in lesson presentation
• Actual living room area, kitchen area and bedroom to provide a realistic setting to display and facilitate fire hazard scenarios for the participants.
• There is air conditioning and heating units to provide a more comfortable season of use.
• Teaching aids to enhance the fire safety program such as a heated door and smoke simulation in the bedroom area.

This project would not be possible without the contributions of several people and agencies. We would like to thank and acknowledge Enbridge Green Energy for the $10,000 dollar donation we used to purchase the trailer. We appreciate Tilbury Auto Sales allowing the department to purchase the trailer at cost to keep the price within the donation amount. We thank Outhouse Designs for designing and wrapping the exterior of the trailer. We are also grateful to Fire Captain Art Van Belle for retrofitting the trailer to make it easy for firefighters to transport and facilitate the fire safety lessons.

We are looking forward to using the trailer in all our Chatham-Kent communities to educate the citizens in fire safety information to reduce deaths, injuries and property loss.

• The place where we feel safest, at home, is where most smoking-materials structure fires, deaths, and injuries occur.
• Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths.
• Smoking material fires are preventable.

Lanny was born on April 8, 1946. He joined the Thamesville-Camden Fire Department in April of 1968. He was an active and trusted member of the fire service for over forty-three years. He was a valued and caring person and a very experienced firefighter. The Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services and all who worked with him recognize and mourn this loss.

Our deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends as they deal with this sad loss.
